From Arduino to Raspberry Pi: Teaching Modern Embedded Systems in 2026

Embedded systems engineers bridge the physical and digital worlds—ranging from bare-metal control with microcontrollers like Arduino to complex Linux-based systems like Raspberry Pi. Success in this field requires orchestrating hardware, low-level software, and critical trade-offs in power, cost, security, and real-time performance. In an era where AI tools are powerful yet “jagged”—capable of rapid prototyping but prone to hallucinations—foundational systems thinking and human oversight remain essential.

Designed for Pre-U STEM educators, this session uses familiar classroom tools like Arduino and Raspberry Pi as springboards to explore the modern embedded landscape. We will examine the core skill sets industry demands today, evaluate how AI changes the design process, and highlight key foundational topics educators can bring into the classroom to bridge teaching gaps and inspire the next generation of engineers.
