Teaching CS in Grades K-8

Helping to teach everyone how to repurpose older computers with Linux to make them run like new again. How to implement a student Tech Stewardship program in grade 6-8, so students learn to care for their own Linux computers as well as provide free devices for their friends in other classrooms (using mainly computers destined for recycling/landfill).

Join us for an interactive workshop designed to empower elementary educators with practical strategies for integrating computer science into their teaching across subject areas. We will explore curriculum-aligned activities that incorporate block-based (Scratch, Micro:bit) and text-based coding (Python).

We will also unlock the power of open data and explore how open datasets can be used across subject areas to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications. Through hands-on activities, educators will experience the transformative potential of open data, empowering students to apply their learning in authentic contexts that have a positive impact on their communities.

The focus of this workshop will be on designing learning experiences which make meaningful cross-curricular connections with coding and math, while equipping students with foundational computational thinking and engineering design skills.

Explore how integrating a variety of technology can build student creativity, engagement and computational thinking skills. Discover how to leverage both digital and non-digital forms of technology to allow for student choice and to foster creative maker mindsets. In collaboration with other educators, investigate how to add an element of digital technology (micro:bit) into a Design and Build challenge where students create their own interactive arcade game. The resources and materials presented will challenge you and your students to take an active role in the development and creation of technology.

This presentation would discuss how to use coding to get a deeper understanding of other strands in math, and in other subjects, like art, music, science, social studies, language, etc. Participants will leave with dozens of projects in Scratch that they can use in their classrooms to help their students solidify their coding skills, while better understanding other subjects.
