Supporting Girls in Computer Science

In this talk, I will be discussing a proposal I shared with my department head and admin that advocated for the creation of an all-girls option of Grade 10 Computer Studies, or ICD2O. I will share the results of a survey sent to computer science students in my school as well as some of the academic research that has been done on this topic. Ideas and suggestions will be presented that aim to increase girls’ interest, self-efficacy, and comfort in a computer science classroom, with time to discuss strategies as a group.

Cybersecurity fundamentals: Learn, protect and inspire

German Arcila and Momina Abid from Digital Moment will present their Cybersecurity curriculum to help teens, parents and teachers navigate this interesting, but confusing topic. The talk and curriculum have three clear goals: 1. Learn about cybersecurity and passwords, 2. Understand and defend yourself against Social Engineering and 3. Explore Ethical Hacking as a path to a rewarding career.

Fuel Classroom Creativity and Innovation Using Tech

Explore how integrating a variety of technology can build student creativity, engagement and computational thinking skills. Discover how to leverage both digital and non-digital forms of technology to allow for student choice and to foster creative maker mindsets. In collaboration with other educators, investigate how to add an element of digital technology (micro:bit) into a Design and Build challenge where students create their own interactive arcade game. The resources and materials presented will challenge you and your students to take an active role in the development and creation of technology.
